Tweed Amps

The demand for 1950’s tweed amps spawned the whole boutique vintage amp reproduction market in the early 90’s, and today they’re as popular as ever.  That’s down to their vibe and cool looks, plus no frills or extra features just great tone and an amp that will respond to every nuance of your playing style.

Just like them, our tweed amps are dynamic and responsive, rich in natural harmonics and overtones.  They’re great for hanging out on that clean/dirty edge and controlling everything from your guitar.  They’re so touch sensitive you can control the tone and breakup by your pick attack alone.

With handwired all tube circuitry using only top quality components, and handmade solid pine cabinets covered in lacquered woven tweed, they have all the style and tone of the originals.

We make most tweed models so ask for any not shown here and also for head options and alternate speaker layouts.

6G Amps

The brown panel amps of the early 60’s are often  overlooked yet that’s changing fast as more and more players discover their qualities. More articulate than the tweeds, more character than the later tolex amps, their tone spans from warm, chimey cleans to full on overdrive that sounds almost British.

The 6G2 and 6G3 are currently popular but we build other early 60’s amps, such as the 3×10 6G7, and offer a choice of speaker layout and power output.

We offer the option of blonde, rough or smooth brown tolex, with choice of maroon, wheat or tweed era grill cloth, and also make matching speaker cabinets.

AB763 Amps

Mid 60’s black tolex Fender amps are probably the most common vintage amp we work on, and with almost 25 years of servicing, restoring and playing them, we know exactly how they should sound and how to set them up.

We’ve been building amps based on them for more than 15 years, from straight reproductions to just about every variation of those classic 60’s circuits you could think of.

We build the AA1164 and most AB763 models, with a choice of power output, speaker layout and cosmetics.  Ask for a quote for any model not shown here.

Plexi Amps

We’ve owned, played and worked on many original plexi amps, and have been building versions of them for over 15 years.  Our aim has always been to capture their incomparable character and tone, and to do that we start from the source, studying, measuring and listening to the best original examples we can find.

Our plexi amps feature Sozo mustard caps, Mullard repro Harma valves and a choice of  Heyboer or Mercury Magnetics transformers. NOS valves and components are available as upgrades subject to availability.

In addition to the popular 18w and 45w amps we build the 20w and some 50w and 100w EL34 circuits, ask for details.

Vintage Amp Services

As vintage amp owners and enthusiasts ourselves, we love old tube amps, from the iconic to the obscure and quirky. We’ve been servicing, repairing, and restoring them for almost 25 years, from the common to the rare and valuable. So whether it’s a TV front tweed, a monster plexi or a silverface workhorse, we’ve probably worked on it.

We do everything from basic servicing to full rebuilds, and specialise in restoring back to stock amps that were modified in the days before ‘vintage’ even existed.

We’ve spent hundreds of hours fixing, tweaking, honing and fine tuning vintage amps and know exactly how to set them up so they work and sound their best. We always use vintage correct parts – either new old stock or modern equivalents – to best preserve the original tone. All work is discussed with and approved by the owner before being done, and all original parts are returned to the owner.

Reissue Amp Services

Over twenty years ago we took a stock JTM45 reissue, gutted and rebuilt it with a handwired turret board and upgraded components. We converted it to EL34’s, installed new transformers and then tested it against an original 1965 JTM45.

Of course it didn’t have the mojo of that old amp, but what really surprised us was that it even got close.

Since then we’ve done similar work to other reissues, such as the amp pictured here. As well as full rebuilds we do valve and component upgrades and circuit revisions to vintage layout and specification.

Whether you’re chasing vintage tone or simply want to improve the sound of your reissue amp, we can advise on the best way to achieve it.
